Saving the Amazon Rainforest is Urgent
Even though Lula da Silva is now President of Brazil, there is still a conservative faction that wants to destroy the Amazon Rainforest for profit and they are pushing a proposed law that was created during Bolsonaro’s presidency. The lower branch of Brazil’s lawmakers passed this bill that would allow massive industries to operate inside the Amazon Rainforest and destroy many Indigenous rights, including those of the peoples who live there and are “uncontacted” by the outside world. The Brazilian Senate is set to vote on the law soon. Scientists and Indigenous people have been saying for a year that 80% of the Amazon must be protected by 2025 or it may die, and if it dies, decaying trees would release up to 200 billion tons of carbon over the next 30-50 years, effectively destroying our climate. Protecting the Amazon means revitalizing dead areas and protecting what is left. PLEASE sign the petition attached—it literally takes about 20 seconds. Brazil does care about how it is seen by the outside world so our voices DO matter even though we don’t live there. You can also read more about the situation in this article by The Guardian here.
I know this article is short on my part—but The Guardian article says it all and I truly hope you will take a moment of time to sign this critically important petition that affects all of us.
Thank you so much for being a part of this community of readers and for caring about our Earth, its people, and wildlife
